ASSEMBLIES
These are held on Thursday mornings every 2/3 weeks in the covered assembly area at 8:50 a.m. They usually last for approximately 30 minutes and include an item, school reports, as well as the presentation of certificates, awards and the school song. A cup of tea is made available to parents after the assembly.
BELL TIMES
Children are encouraged not to be at school before 8:35 in the morning.

Start: 8:50 am
Recess: 10:30 am - 10:50 am
Lunch: 12:35 pm - 1:15 pm

BOOKLISTS
A list of recommended items is issued at the end of each year for the following year from PP—Year 7. Our school uses Wooldridges. However, parents can access any book seller, but it is important to note that some items may only be available through Wooldridges. The personal items booklist from Wooldridges has to be returned during Term 4 so the items can be picked up at the end of January from the school library.
BULLYING
The school has in place programs and strategies to address bullying when it comes up from time to time. This information is part of our Discipline Policy (Monitoring Student Behaviour). We encourage parents to work with the staff and school when incidences are brought to our attention.
CANTEEN
The P & C operate our school canteen. Mary is our Manageress. The canteen is open on Monday, Thursday and Friday each week. Lunch orders need to be placed at the canteen before school. The canteen sells morning tea snacks. A summer and winter menu is available. The canteen can only operate with volunteer parent help. Lunches are provided free to the parents who come in to assist.
DENTAL THERAPY UNIT
The children are given the opportunity to be enrolled at the Beaconsfield Dental Therapy Unit. Appointments are issued through the school for children to attend as required. The Unit can be contacted on 9335 8758.
DISCIPLINE POLICY
The school has a Discipline Policy, which encourages appropriate behaviour. The Policy includes a Code of Conduct, a set of rules and a list of children’s, parent’s and teacher’s rights and responsibilities. The policy outlines both classroom and playground expectations and includes a policy on specific behaviours. Copies are available at the office for viewing.
DRESS CODE
The school has a Dress Code Policy, which has been established through a consultative process involving all parents and the School Council. Enrolment at the school implies compliance with this policy. The P & C run a clothing store and appropriate clothing can be ordered through this service at various times of the year. Pre-Used clothes are also available. The clothing store is open on Tuesday mornings between 8:45a.m. and 9:15a.m. Suitable items of clothing can be purchased at other shops. All children are required to wear a hat when outdoors as well as suitable footwear.
DUTY OF CARE
The school owes a duty of care to students from 8:35 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. This level of care diminishes as the children get closer to home before and after school. Children are not encouraged to be at school before 8:35 a.m. or after 3:10 p.m. as supervision cannot be guaranteed. Children arriving early will be asked to sit outside the office area until their teacher arrives. Children who come on to the school grounds after school must be under the care of an adult. Level 3 Education Assistants can assume shared supervision of students during school hours. There is a duty roster for all recess breaks.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
The school has a policy which deals with emergency situations. The plan outlines procedures to be followed to manage potential situations which may lead to emergencies from developing and procedures to be followed both during and after any emergency. The school undertakes evacuation drills. Each classroom has a plan for staff to follow in case of an evacuation.
EXCURSION POLICY
The school has a comprehensive excursion policy and no child will be allowed to attend an excursion unless the necessary forms, and if required, money has been returned to school by the due date. At the end of each year parents are informed of the likely costs of excursions for the coming year.
FACTIONS
There are three factions—Green (Challenger), Gold (Parmelia) and Purple (Success). When enrolled, children are placed in a faction depending on family or faction numbers. Various school events are organised along faction lines.
HATS
All children are required to wear a hat at all times when they are in the playground. Children without a hat are asked to play in the covered assembly area. The recommended hat style should cover the ears, face and back of neck. Hats are available from the Uniform Shop.
HEADLICE
Headlice are often present in school communities. Parents are requested to develop a routine by checking their child’s hair on Fridays and treat the hair if necessary over the weekend. The Health Department encourages a 10 day treatment using Conditioner. It is important though that the hair is combed with a fine tooth comb during the 10 days to remove any new hatchlings. Notes are sent home to parents of all students in a class if headlice activity is noticed. Parents can contact the office to pick up Health Department background sheets on headlice.
HOMEWORK
The school has a homework policy which involves reading, learning, spelling and/or phonic lists as well as consolidating concepts taught in class. The policy was put together with the assistance of the School Council. All children should be encouraged to read at home. From time to time children may have work to complete or a project to do. Parent support in encouraging children to complete these activities would be appreciated. The school encourages children to enter in a wide range of competitions during the year. A homework policy approved by the School Council is available for viewing at the office.
ILLNESS
Children who are not well need to remain at home for recovery and to lessen the potential of other children becoming sick. Children sent to the sick bay will be observed for a short time and parents rung if they continue to be unwell. It is important that emergency contact numbers are kept up to date.
INTERNET USAGE
Children are asked to abide by an Internet Agreement which addresses accessing sites not of a suitable nature. Parents will be notified if a child has access removed for a short time due to failing to abide by the Agreement.

LOST PROPERTY
Lost property is kept at the Uniform store. At the end of each term, unclaimed items are displayed and later recycled if owners can’t be found.
MEETING WITH TEACHERS
Parents are encouraged to meet with staff to discuss matters concerning their children. Please contact the office to arrange a mutually convenient time. Before and after school meetings may be difficult to organise unless prior arrangements have been made. This is particularly so in the mornings when teachers are preparing for the day.
NEWSLETTER
A school newsletter is produced fortnightly on Thursdays. All students receive a copy. Other notes/letters will come home from time to time. A copy of the newsletter can also be emailed to you. Contact the office if you would like to receive your copy this way.
PARKING
Parent parking is available on Hope Street and along the road verges around the school. Parents are requested not to park in the staff parking area at the start/end of the day due to the movement of students in this area. Please note that there are ‘No Standing’ zones that from time to time are monitored by City of Fremantle Rangers.
P & C
Our P & C group meet twice a term (usually in the third week of a month) on a Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. All parents are encouraged to be involved in supporting the P & C in its activities. The P & C has set a Voluntary Annual Contribution of $50.00 per family. This will be asked for in Term 1. Parents are welcome to come along to our family picnic early in the new year before daylight saving ends. The P & C plan to hold a Fair in March 2010.
REPORTING TO PARENTS
Students receive two progress reports each year. The school conducts an Open Evening during the latter part of the year. At the start of each year staff send home information regarding their classroom. Parents are encouraged to keep in regular contact with their child’s teacher. Meetings are usually held during a teacher’s release time (DOTT) or at other mutually convenient times. A Formal interview will be offered during the year also. Other information for parents includes: Information presented at School Council Meetings placed in the newsletter, School Annual Report presented in Term 1, School Planning Information prepared to develop areas of need picked up through, School Surveys and testing programs. NAPLAN results for Year 3, 5 and 7 sent home in September
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The School Council consists of 5 parents and 3 staff. They are nominated and where necessary elected to their position. The Council decides the school’s priorities and approves the School Operational Plan for these priorities. The School Budget is presented to the Council for approval and is monitored at each meeting. It also reviews various aspects of School Policy. Parents are elected for a two year period. The Council meets 5 times a year.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Class and individual photos are taken each year by a commercial photographer. A pre-paid system operates. Families can elect not to buy any photos if they wish.
SCHOOL WATCH
School Watch is part of the Department of Education’s Security System. Please report any suspicious activity by ringing 9264 4632.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
The school has access to a School Nurse and a School Psychologist. Parents wishing to use these services should contact the teacher or the Principal. Parents must sign a consent form before the School Psychologist can arrange to work with a child.
VALUABLES
From time to time students bring valuables to school to show for ‘News’ or play with during recesses. We advise children to hand ‘News’ items to the teacher for safe keeping. Other toys, jewellery, electronic games/equipment should stay at home unless arrangements have been made with the teacher.
VIEWING
Students view videos, tapes and TV programs as part of the school program adhering to the video classification code (G). Non print materials are also used during wet weather days at recesses. Parents will be asked to indicate if they give their permission for their children to view (G) rated shows during the year or be given the option to withdraw from a viewing.
