ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

Our school has access to an Aboriginal Education Officer who works with students on Thursdays, hearing reading, assisting with writing/maths and checking on homework. Part of the A.I.E.O.’s role is also to liaise with parents to promote educational opportunities for our students. Staff also present a Unit of work on Aboriginal Studies to all of the students in each class to raise an awareness of Aboriginal culture, customs, history and the position of Aboriginal role models in our community.

ART

All children have a specialist art lesson once a week. For the protection of their normal school clothes, children are required to have suitable protective clothing. An old adult sized shirt is an ideal item.

CAMPS

The school conducts camps for Year 6 and Year 7 students based on its Environmental Studies program. The location of each camp varies but the school endeavours to run a 3 day Year 6 camp and a 4 day Year 7 camp.

DAILY FITNESS

For most of the year all children are involved in a Daily Fitness program. This program involves children undertaking 15 minutes of physical activity. Children require suitable footwear for such activities. Loose and open toed footwear is not suitable. All children participate in this program unless they have a note from their parents excusing them because of illness.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Children in Years 6 and 7 who have been identified by a selection test have the opportunity to participate in the Instrumental Music program based at South Fremantle Senior High School. These children attend one music lesson a week and children in Year 6 and 7 participate in the Junior Band.

LIBRARY

Children have access to our well equipped library. Classes are rostered to borrow books. Each child requires a library bag. Lost or damaged library books will incur a charge.

PEAC—PRIMARY EXTENSION AND CHALLENGE

Students in Years 5 to 7 who have been identified by the PEAC testing program in Year 4 or nominated by their teachers have the opportunity to participate in this District run program. Academically talented students can enrol in courses that run from 3 weeks to a term.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

At our school, student participate in:
• Daily Fitness for 15 minutes each day for most of the year
• A formal skills session for up to 1 hour a week
• A sports program for years 4-7.

The school incorporates Edudance for Years PP—Year 7, In term Swimming for Years 1-7, a Winter Sports Interschool Carnival for Years 4-7 and an Athletics program that involves an Interschool and school carnival.

At other times various clinics are held for other sports, eg football, cricket and basketball.

All children are encouraged to participate in physical education activities unless they have a note from home.
SPECIALIST  TEACHERS

As part of our education program the school employs Specialist Teachers.  Currently White Gum Valley has:
• Visual Arts teacher teaching art and craft
• Music Arts teacher teaching singing and percussion
• LOTE teacher who focuses on Italian in Years 3-7

The number of staff and actual areas covered in any year is dependent on the school’s staffing allocation.  The staffing allocation is based on the number of children enrolled at the school.  Our school is fortunate to have attached to it a Chaplain for 2 days a week, an Aboriginal Education Officer for 1 day per week, a School Psychologist for 1 day a fortnight and access to a School Nurse and Dental Therapy Unit.

EDUCATION  ASSISTANTS

There are several Education Assistants attached to the school.  Assistants work in the Kindergarten, Pre-Primary and Junior Primary areas as well as can be attached to classes across the school where there are children identified special needs.
